Cardinal Softball Sweeps Competition

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla.---The Wheeling Jesuit softball team earned a pair of victories on Friday evening at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Cardinals secured a 9-1 victory over Lake Erie College and claimed a 6-4 win over Holy Family University.
 
Wheeling Jesuit avenged Thursday's 7-6 loss to Lake Erie by scoring three runs in the second inning, for runs in the third inning, and two in the seventh while only allowing the Storm to plate one run.. Shaynna Johnson led-off the second inning with a base hit and Aleecia Sunagel earned first base after being hit by a pitch. With two runners on, a pair of Lake Erie fielding errors allowed Victoria Vuljanic to reach first base and two runs to score while the second error plated Vuljanic.
 
In the third inning, Lorian Tharp opened with a single and two LEC fielding errors allowed Angie Reddick and Johnson to load the bases. Sunagel cleared the bases with one swing of the bat as she blasted a grand slam homerun, collecting four RBI. Skylar Berger followed with a double, but was stranded at third. Tharp added a double in the fourth inning, and Vuljanic singled in the fifth before Jesuit plated two runs in the seventh.
 
Brittany Miller started the seventh with a walk, and after advancing to second on a passed ball, scored on an RBI single by Darci Lake. Lake plated Jesuit's final run after a LEC fielding error allowed Vuljanic to reach base for the third time.
 
Ashley Nichols earned the complete game victory, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out three batters.
 
In game two, Jesuit started the scoring in the first inning. The Cardinals received back-to-back base hits form lead-off batter Jara Ice and Tharp. Both, Ice and Tharp, Cardinals plated runs as Sunagel, Berger and Sydney Mencke all singled.
 
Holy Family responded with two runs in the second inning, tying the game 2-2, and added a run for a 3-2 advantage in the third inning. However, the Cardinals rallied with four runs in the fourth inning for a 6-3 advantage. Vuljanic reached on a fielder's choice, and Rachel Conrad singled behind her. With runners on first and second, Ice blasted a double which plated Vuljanic and sent Conrad to third. Tharp followed with a bases clearing three-run homerun to lift the Cardinals to a 6-3 advantage. Holy Family added a run in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals held on for the win.
 
Reddick earned Wheeling Jesuit's second win of the day, pitching a complete game and allowing nine hits and four earned runs with four strike outs.
 
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, March 9 against Ferris State Universty at 11 a.m. and Ashland University at 3 p.m.
