Wheeling Jesuit Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Final Seconds

Box Score BOONE, N.C.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team traveled to Boone, N.C. for a game with Lees-McRae College which was moved from Banner Elk, N.C. to Watauga High School. The Cardinals fell in the final seconds as the Bobcats surged for a goal in the final seconds of the game to break a 7-7 stalemate and claim an 8-7 victory.
 
It was a cold and windy battle in North Carolina with temperatures around 30 degrees and gusts of wind between 30-35 mph.  Lees-McRae started the scoring with a free position shot at 23:23, but the Cardinals answered with two goals to take a 2-1 advantage. Stephanie Katona rattled the cage first for Jesuit, Jessie Tufnell followed when Allie Fetty led her to the net. LMC regained the lead, 3-2, with back-to-back shots. The Cardinals tied the game before halftime as Tufnell fired a shot between the pipes with 3:37 left to play in the half.
 
The second half was a back-and-forth battle to the finish. LMC opened with a goal, but Jesuit found the net twice as Fetty touched the twine and Tufnell recorded her third goal of the game – Katona assisted Tufnell's goal. LMC tied the game at five goals apiece with 13:45 remaining in the game and added two more goals, establishing a 7-5 lead with 6:37 left to play. The Cardinals answered with a goal at 4:53 and tied the game with 2:17 remaining as Fetty netted the sixth goal and Sara Fitzsimon knotted the contest, 7-7.
 
After winning the draw, WJU was in a position to win the game, but a turnover proved to be costly. The Bobcats quickly moved the ball down the field after the takeaway and scored a game-winning goal with 12-seconds remaining in the contest.
 
Tufnell led the Cardinals' offense with three goals and an assist while Fetty found the back of the net twice – Fetty added an assist. Katona followed with a goal and assist and Fitzsimon rounded out the scoring with a goal. Jesuit held a 49-45 advantage on ground balls as Fitzsimon led with nine pick-ups. Shelby McClure followed with seven ground balls while Katona, Fetty and Cassidy Forsen secured six each.
 
Hanna Lazuka received the loss while collecting five saves.
 
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action in Fairmont, W.Va. at Duvall-Rosier Field against West Virginia Wesleyan College. First draw is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
