Box Score Fairmont, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team traveled to Fairmont, W.Va. to play West Virginia Wesleyan College at Fairmont State University's Duvall-Rosier Field on Sunday. The Cardinals' surged with five straight goals in the first half, and carried the momentum into the second frame for a 15-6 victory over the Bobcats. With the win, WJU improved to 2-3 overall while WVWC fell to 2-4 overall.
The Cardinals' offense was led by
Jessie Tufnell's seven points which included five goals and two assists.
Sara Fitzsimon followed with four goals and an assist while
Stephanie Katona added two goals and an assist, and Alley Fetty notched two assists and a goal.
Shelby McClure and
Kaitlyn Boyd chipped in two goals and one goal, respectively. Cassidy Forsen added an assist.
The Cardinals opened the game with back-to-back strikes on the net at 29:05 and 27:11. Katona found Tufnell for WJU's initial score, and Tufnell led Fitzsimon to the cage for Jesuit's second goal.
After a Bobcat goal, Jesuit rallied for five consecutive goals, building a 7-1 advantage with 13:11 left in the first half. Tufnell started the scoring outburst at 25:35 when Forsen found her open in front of the cage. Fitzsimon followed with back-to-back strikes, and Tufnell found Katona. The run ended after Tufnell recorded her third goal of the game and a Bobcat goal. With a 7-2 lead, Fetty lifted the Cardinals to a six-goal advantage, however, Weleyan answered with two goals. The Cardinals closed out the half in dramatic fashion as Katona fired a shot into the twine with five seconds remaining. WJU led 9-4 at the break.
In the second half, McClure gave the Cardinals their 10
th goal of the day, but Weslayn answered with two goals, 10-6. In the final 12:42, Jesuit surged with five consecutive goals again. Fetty assisted the first two shots as Fitzsimon and Tufnell finished in the back of the net. Tufnell followed with a goal and McClure beat the WVWC goalie for Jesuit's 14
th score. The final goal of the evening was recorded with 1:03 left in the game as Fitzsimon distributed the entry pass to Boyd. Boyd finished, lifting the Cardinals to a 15-6 victory.
Jesuit held a 7-4 advantage in ground balls as Fitzsimon picked-up a team-high four ground balls while securing nine draw controls. Forsen, Katona and Fetty tallied one ground ball each – Forsen collected two draw controls and Fetty secured one.
Hannah Lazuka earned the win between the pipes with nine saves in the 60-minute contest.
The Cardinals will host Seton Hill University on Wednesday, March 13 at Bethany College's Bison Stadium. First draw is set for 7 p.m.
