Women’s Lacrosse Cruises to Season’s First Victory, 14-9

Box Score BETHANY, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team recorded the first win of the season on Saturday evening with a 14-9 rout of Siena Heights University at Bethany College's Bison Stadium.
 
The Cardinals' offensive outburst was fueled by Jessie Tufnell's five points which included three goals and two assists. Sara Fitzsimon followed with three points, two goals and an assist, while Annie Campbell, Shelby McClure and Allie Fetty each had two goals. Stephanie Katona, Molly Parker and Cassidy Forsen rounded out the scoring with two points, a goal and an assist each.
 
Tufnell also led the Cardinals efforts on the ground, picking up six of Jesuit's 25 ground balls. Fitzsimon secured four ground balls, and six others secured two. Fitzsimon and Parker claimed three draw controls apiece while Tufnell and Fetty had two.
 
Jesuit (1-1) opened with a 2-0 lead as McClure netted both WJU's initial goals. She connected on a free position attempt at 28:02 and traveled around the backside of the cage and fired her second shot past the goalie at 25:50.
 
The Saints (0-1) cut the lead in half, 2-1, with 24:35 showing on the clock: however, the Cardinals answered 24-seconds later and added a fourth goal at 21:18 – Tufnell recorded the first goal and Fetty had the second.
 
The two teams traded scores as Campbell put two in the net for the Cards – A free position goal and a bank shot off the carpet. Fitzsimon followed Campbell's second goal to give Jesuit a 7-3 advantage. After another Saints goal, Jesuit touched the twine as Fetty gave the Cardinals an 8-4 halftime lead.
 
After the break, Tufnell lifted the Cardinals to10-4 advantage, and after a couple of SHU goals, Forsen and Parker rattled the cage to make it an 11-6 game. Fitzsimon, Katona and Tufnell wrapped-up the Cardinals scoring en route to the five goal victory.
 
Hannah Lazuka earned the win between the Pipes for the Cardinals while recording eight saves.
 
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action at Bison Stadium on Sunday, March 3 against Lindenwood University. First Draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
