Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team fell 67-56 to the University of Charleston on Thursday evening at the Alma Grace McDonough Center. The Golden Eagles used the second half to break a 29-29 halftime stalemate and record the WVIAC win.
The Cardinals' offense was led by
Jaila Bryant with 15 points and added five rebounds.
Jamie Sobczak followed with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds, and
Taylor Lubinsky added eight points, three steals and two rebounds.
Kelsey Pacholke secured eight rebounds and
Alex Anderson collected six boards as the duo finished with four points a piece.
The Cardinals (8-17, 5-16 WVIAC) controlled the game tempo for most first half. WJU established a five point lead by the 15-minute mark and continued to add points to the scoreboard, leading by as many as 10 points.
At 10:48, Bryant flew past the Golden Eagle defense to finish with a layup and give the Cardinals a 19-9 advantage. UC retaliated with a pair of buckets, but
Taneka Lewis answered with a lay-in to give the Cardinals an eight point advantage, 21-13.
Wheeling Jesuit maintained the eight point spread to the 2:45 mark when back-to-back strikes, a layup and 3-pointer, by UC cut the Cardinals' lead to 27-24. Another long distance shot by the Golden Eagles tied the game at 27 apiece with 1:17 remaining in the half. Sobzcak lifted the Cardinals to a two point advantage with a pair of free throws, but as time expired, UC's Chrissy Keir connected with a lay-in to tie the game 29-29.
After the break, the Golden Eagles established the early lead with a field goal and two free throws. Jesuit responded with six points as Pacholke and Sobczak found the bottom of the net. Sobczak followed with a layup to complete the 6-0 Cardinal run, establishing a 35-33 advantage. UC answered with a field goal and a 3-pointer for a 38-35 advantage while WJU's Lunbinsky kept the game close with a layup, 38-37. The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to six points, 43-37, with a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer, and the Cardinals never recovered.
Keir, Jessi Cowden and LeAnne Ross each tallied 15 points to lead the Golden Eagles' offensive efforts. Cowded completed a double-double performance with a team-high 13 rebounds.
The Cardinals will travel to West Liberty University for the regular season finale on Saturday, February 23. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
