Box Score VIENNA, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team survived a 41-point second half scoring outburst by the home standing Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley University en route to a 66-64 victory.
Breanna Butler and Jamie Sobzcak combined for 44 of the Cardinals' 66 points as Butler led with a team-best 24 points. Sobczak followed with a double-double performance, scoring 20 points and pulling down a team-high 20 rebounds.
Jaila Bryant added 14 points to the offensive mix, which included the game-winning field goal. In addition, Butler and Bryant secured five boards apiece.
The Fighting Scots opened the game with a pair of trifectas and a field goal for an 8-2 advantage, however, the Cardinals fired back and took over the scoreboard by the 16:51 mark. Jesuit responded with an
Alex Anderson layup and a pair of 3-pointers by Butler and Bryant, establishing a 10-8 advantage. On the ensuing possession, Butler swiped a pass and found Bryant for a lay-in and 4-point advantage, 12-8.
Ohio Valley answered with a pair of buckets to tie the game at 12 apiece, and Jesuit responded a 7-0 run on four free throws and a 3-point field goal. Sobczak tallied five points during the run while Butler and
Taylor Lubinsky added one point each, 19-12. The Fighting Scots ended the Cardinal run with a 3-pointer and added a 2-point field goal, and WJU answered with a 9-0 run for a 32-17 lead. The Cardinals extended the lead to as many as 18 points before closing out the first half with a 39-23 advantage.
Butler opened the second half with a 3-pointer, and the Cardinals maintained a double-digit advantage as the Fighting Scots slowly chipped away at the lead. At 8:48, OVU connected from long distance to narrow the Cardinal lead to nine points, 54-42. The two teams battled back-and-forth until the Fighting Scots made another charge to steal the game.
With two minutes left to play and Jesuit clinging on to a 64-57 lead, OVU's Jasmine Gipson sparked a 7-0 run with a pair of lay-ins, and Shelby Way knocked down a long range jumper to tie the game, 64-64, with under a minute to play. With 49 seconds on the clock, Jesuit missed an opportunity to regain the lead, and the Fighting Scots couldn't find the bottom of the net either. Butler grabbed the OVU miscue, with 14 seconds to go, and rushed the ball down the floor. With 3.9 seconds left in regulation, Bryant drove the lane and buried the game-winning layup.
Ohio Valley outscored WJU 41-27 in the second half as Way led the Fighting Scots' offense with 19 points. Gibson and Amy Brooks added 12 and 11, respectively, while Kayla Parsley grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday, February 21 at the Alma Grace McDonough Center for their final home game of the season against the University of Charleston. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
