Box Score WHEELING, W. Va.- The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team took on the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats at Emily LaRosa field with a spot in the Mountain East Conference Playoffs on the line. Wesleyan won the match with a 1-0, scoring the games only goal on a penalty kick.
The two teams faced off earlier this season resulting in a 0-1 Bobcat victory, and this match was a battle until the dying seconds with post season aspirations on the line for WJU. However, the loss will bring WJU's season to a close. Wesleyan now goes onto the playoffs ranked 3rd with a 11-4-2 overall record.
"I'm very disappointed with the games result, but not with the effort," said WJU head coach
Carrie Hanna. "This was one of the best games in terms of heart and effort we've played all year. It's always hard losing on a penalty kick."
The first half started off evenly balanced with the Cardinals holding a 5-3 shot advantage over the Bobcats. Wesleyan caught the break they needed when WJU's #3
Jenna Klemkowsky was penalized for a take down resulting in a Bobcat penalty kick. WVWC's #10, Tiana Bennardo, put the ball in the upper right hand corner of the net putting Wesleyan up 1-0 in the 25th minute.
Wesleyan took control of the ball in the second half with a 6-2 shot advantage. The Bobcats had a chance to double their lead with a shot bouncing off the crossbar followed by a header off the rebound that sailed high.
WJU had the opportunity they needed to tie the match and head to the post season when #4
Caroline Gacka was awarded a penalty kick from 20 meters out. Unfortunately for WJU, the shot hooked high and bounced off the post, keeping the Cardinals scoreless until time expired.
"I want to say thank you to the seniors and for all the work they have done," added Coach Hanna. "For the future players I hope this leaves a bad taste in their mouths and one that will help us get the job done next year."
The loss puts WJU out of MEC playoff contention, instead allowing for Shepherd to take the fourth and final spot. Both WJU and Shepherd had 15 conference points, but Shepherd's 7-8-3 overall record gives them the playoff berth.
