Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit Men's soccer team earned a solid 3-1 non-conference victory over Gannon University on Saturday, giving them a boost of confidence heading into an all-or-nothing conference game for a trip to the MEC playoffs.
Junior midfielder
Luke Roan's (Liverpool, England) shot in the 19
th minute of the first half from left to right, squirted underneath the Gannon goalie to put the Cardinals up 1-0 early in the first half.
A couple of possessions later, goaltender
Cody Thompson (Kingwood, W.Va.) slammed the door shut on the Golden Knights by laying out to make a picture perfect save on a breakaway that would have tied the game.
In the second half, freshman
Jordan Frommeyer (Alexandria, Ky.) extended WJU's lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal in the 66
th minute.
But, a little more than 8 minutes later, Gannon would get themselves back into the game after a well placed corner kick was put in goal on a header by Gannon's #8 Alex Perri.
It was fitting that a senior would put the game away for the Cardinals on senior day. Midfielder
George Noubossie (Silver Spring, Md.) took advantage of a mistake by Gannon's goaltender, Matthew Dixon. Dixon had a free kick from his own goal, but slipped on his approach to the ball. The result was a low liner aimed directly at midfield, but short. Noubossie one-timed the errant kick, and sailed it over Dixon's head and safely in the back of the net.
"I am really happy for our seniors today. It was great to come out and get a win for them," said WJU head coach Jim Regan. "We played well and after we got up 2-0, we started to think it really should have been more with the number of opportunities we had. In the second half, the ball bounced our way for once and we were able to seal the victory for the guys getting ready to graduate."
The Cardinals will take the field Tuesday at home with everything on the line for the 2013 season against West Virginia Wesleyan at 3 pm. A win places the Cardinals in the Mountain East Conference tournament. A loss means the end of the season.
