Jesuit Women’s Soccer Falls to West Liberty

Box Score
WSOC Senior Day
Wheeling, WVa. – Senior Day for the Women's Soccer program started off beautifully for the Lady Cardinals.   The nine seniors met their parents at midfield roses in hand and youth soccer girls from the local community joined the team as introductions began the contest against visiting West Liberty University.

As play unfolded, West Liberty was able to manage the cold and windy playing conditions better than Wheeling Jesuit on a field that was softened during the week by rain showers.

West Liberty's Courtney Webb drew first blood at 13:29 of the first half to put the Hilltoppers up 1-0, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the afternoon.

At 29:23 West Liberty was awarded a penalty kick after a foul in front of Wheeling Jesuit's goal.  WLU's Janice Johnson put the penalty kick home drilling the ball left of WJU's goaltender, Carley Kordas (Sophomore, Ambridge, Pa.), to make it WLU 2-0.

Most of the second half resulted in both teams moving the ball back and forth with little scoring opportunities.  On the day, West Liberty outshot Wheeling Jesuit 12-9.

The final goal came on a fluke shot from West Liberty's Alexa Robinson approximately 30 yards out and from the right.  The ball hit the top right corner of the goal, was pinned by the left hand of Kordas, but still somehow made its way through.  The game ended West Liberty 3 Wheeling Jesuit 0.

"Emotions were high today with it being Senior Day.  It was a disappointing loss because a win would have clinched a berth in the Mountain East Conference tournament for us.  We are still focused on controlling our own fate and getting a win on Wednesday against West Virginia Wesleyan to get one of the four spots in the MEC women's soccer tournament, stated Head Coach Carrie Hanna.

Wheeling Jesuit returns to play this coming Wednesday when they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 3pm with the season in the balance.
