Jesuit Swimming Shocks Cal and Notre Dame College with Upset Wins

CALIFORNIA, Penn. - The Wheeling Jesuit Swimming Team began their dual meet season on a high note with the women's team taking a stunning 102-101 upset victory over perennial PSAC powerhouse California University of PA, and a strong victory over defending ASC Champions, Notre Dame College.
The Jesuit men also logged a big win over Notre Dame to get their season off right as well.
The upset for the women began in the 400 Medley Relay team of Danielle Perkular, Megan Ebbert, Alexis Anderson and Anna Davis winning by a mere .008, with a 4:08:08.  Ebbert and Anderson came back 2 events later for a 1-2 pinch in the 200 IM.  Anderson continued to dominate with a victory in the 200 fly, and Sloane Glover and Stefanie Bouborka piled on points with their 3-4 finish.
Another 1-2 in the 100 free by Davis and Brittany Foster, put the Vulcans on defense. Paige Carpenetti and Perkular added another 1-2 in the 200 back with Caitie Preskorn adding to the total with a 5th. Ebbert returned in the 200 breast stroke to bring the final outcome down to the last relay, all the Cardinals needed was a 2nd place finish to gain the victory.
The ladies also defeated defending Appalachian Swimming Conference Champions, Notre Dame College, by a score of 126-78. "The Women's team had a fantastic night swimming with pride and determination," said captain Meghan Ebbert. "We were strong inside the flags, and that made all the difference."
The Jesuit men cruised to victory over NDC, 155-36.  Like the women's team before them, the men started out with a victory in the medley relay. Jakub "Kuba" Skrzypczak led off with a blazing 53:43 in the 100 back, followed by Bill Risse, Zach Hamm, and Peter Scharff.
The men flexed their muscle in the distance events with a 1-2 in the 100 with Chris Munster swimming to victory at 10:21:66, and Evan Walker in 10:35:17. Michael Pineda also won two events with great swims in the 200 and 100 freestyle.
Henrique Fructuozo showed his unusual versatility by winning 3 events, the 200 IM, a smooth 4:51:29 in the 500, and then less than 5 minutes later, a victory in the 200 Breaststroke in 2:18:00.
Walker and Munster switched places in a 1-2-3 performance in the 200 fly, Walker winning in 2:03:97 Munster, 2:09:92 and Matt Whitehurst in 2:16:27. "Kuba" claimed victory in the 200 back with a fantastic 1:55:75 in the 200 backstroke.
The Cardinals got another 1-2-3 finish in the 500 behind Fructuozo and Munster was Jake Plichta in a 5:09:60 and 5:14.65 respectively.
Pete Scharff was the other Victor with a 22.71 50 freestyle and teamed up with Kuba, Pineada and Hamm in the 400 relay.
"We expected to swim fast, but this was pretty exceptional," said captain Bill Risse. "We asked our men to swim different events to compensate for NDC's strengths… to come out of their "comfort zones" and swim fast. They answered the call."
