Jesuit Men’s & Women’s Soccer Teams Leave Charleston Winless

Box Score CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Both the men's and the women's WJU soccer teams traveled to the state capitol on Wednesday to take on the University of Charleston with the Cardinal women coming out on the losing side of a 3-1 score line, and the men falling 3-0.

Following the pair of losses, the WJU women now fall to 5-8-3 (4-5-3 MEC) and the men fall to 5-6-4 (4-4-3 MEC) on the season.

The women were the first to kick off the day's action against the Golden Eagles, and it was the Cardinals who would get on the board first. WJU got off to a near perfect start just two minutes into the game when captain Jessie Vilkofsky fed #8 Allison Geary a pass who then drained the shot in the right corner to put WJU up 1-0.

The Cardinals would hang on to that 1-0 lead through halftime until the 51st minute when Charleston's Lauren Haven put a shot in the top-middle of the net to tie the match at 1.

As the seconds ticked away, the match was still anyone's to win, until the 76th minute when Charleston added another goal to go up 2-1, before adding another goal just three minutes later in the 80th minute to bring the final score to 3-1.

The Jesuit men had a tougher time finding the shots they needed to keep Charleston at bay.

The first half was a defensive battle, with neither team finding much success getting shots off in the cold, wet, evening air. It wasn't till the 42nd minute when Charleston got on the board through a breakaway from goal scorer Lewis Osborne, giving the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead and the momentum headed into the break.

Charleston wasted no time extending the lead in the second half, scoring in the 49th minute, and again in the 70th minute to go ahead to the final 3-0 score line.

"We were outplayed in all areas of the pitch tonight," said WJU head coach Jim Regan. "This is the first time I can say I'm disappointed in our performance and effort. Full credit to Charleston though, they were certainly the better team on the evening."

The Cardinal men and women return home on Saturday when the women will take on cross-town rival West Liberty at noon, and the men will face Gannon at 2.
