Box Score ATHENS, WVa. – On a steel gray Saturday afternoon, The Wheeling Jesuit Men's Soccer team took the field at Concord University's Anderson Field with one reality: This game was a must win for the Cardinals to make the Mountain East Conference Men's Soccer Championship tournament.
"Concord knew what this meant to us today and they did everything in their power to play the role of the spoiler. We knew this was going to be a gritty and tough soccer match," said Head Coach Jim Regan.
The men's soccer team won its last match 3-0 over Shepherd University. But over the course of the past month, Regan thought he was starring as Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog's Day, witnessing his team outplay each of its opponents for 80 minutes only to give up a late goal to even the score and ultimately end regulation and two overtimes in a tie.
On this Saturday afternoon, it would be Wheeling Jesuit University who would get a late goal to pull away and win, 1-0.
At 72:52 into the contest, WJU pushed the ball up the right side of the field. #6
Kevin Robson (Senior, Glasgow, Scotland) crossed the ball to the far left post only to find the right foot of #17
Brandon Waugerman (Sophomore, Kingwood, WVa.), who put the ball behind Concord goaltender Mitchell Thompson.
The Cardinals, utilizing a 4-5-1 formation, came out a little sluggish in the first half. Concord had the advantage in the first half as most of the game was played in the middle part of the field. WJU only managed 4 shots on goal until halftime.
In the second half, Regan changed to a more offensive 3-5-2 formation knowing that he had to gain a notch in the "W" column.
In big games such as this one, big players make big plays at the most crucial time. Senior goal keeper
Cody Thompson (Kingwood, WVa.) made a crucial save at the 87:27 minute mark against Concord's Kris Robbins to keep Wheeling Jesuit ahead 1-0. Thompson stood tall in the second half as Concord posted 10 shots on goal and three corner kicks.
"The players and coaches knew going into this game what was at stake for our program and our pursuit to make the MEC playoffs this year. We got lucky in the last 15 minutes of the game and got the goal we needed to continue our journey and get the three points we needed. It was a big victory for us on the road," added Regan.
The win moves Wheeling Jesuit's record in the Mountain East Conference to 4-3-3 and 5-5-4 overall. The Cardinals travel to Charleston, WVa. on Wednesday, October 23
rd to take on University of Charleston at 7pm.
