Box Score Greensburg, Pa.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team fell 88-80 on the road to Seton Hill University on Saturday afternoon. Jesuit (4-6, 1-5 WVIAC) held an early advantage, but the home standing Griffins (8-4, 5-1 WVIAC) battled back for the win.
The Cardinals were led by
Taneka Lewis with 23 points on 7-of-11 (64 percent) shooting from the field which included a 2-for-2 showing from downtown. Lewis also added a perfect 7-for-7 effort from the foul line.
Jamie Sobczak followed with 17 points, while
Emily Robinson and
Alex Anderson added 12 and 11, respectively.
The Cardinals led by as many as seven points in the initial period. After battling to a 20-20 stalemate,
Taylor Lubinsky lifted the Cardinals to a two point advantage with a layup. Sobczak followed with back-to-back buckets, a 3-pointer and lay-in, for a 27-20 lead. However, the Griffins battled back with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 29 apiece. Over the next two minutes, the two teams traded buckets, but with 3:09 remaining in the first half, Seton Hill's offense surged again. The Griffins ended the first half on a 12-2 run for a 45-35 advantage.
After the break, Jesuit cut the deficit to five points on several occasions, but the Griffins continued to battle back to a double-digit advantage. Jesuit narrowed the margin to four points, 60-56, after a 7-0 run sparked by Sobczak and
Kelsey Pacholke. The Griffins held on to a 5-6 point lead over the next four minutes, but surged again, building an 81-67 lead with 2:05 left to play.
Seton Hill was led by Katie Gattuso's double-double performance of 21 points and 18 rebounds. Paige Alviani added a 21-point effort, while Tiara Stossel chipped in 16, Kelly Brennen scored 13 and Meghan Mastroianni finished with 10.
In the second half, the Cardinals shot 15-for-32 (47 percent) from the field, 4-for-9 (44 percent) from extended field goal range and 11-for-13 (85 percent) from the foul line. Jesuit limited the Griffins to just eight made field goals in the second half (8-for-27, 30 percent), however, Seton Hill made 28 trips to the foul line (23-for-28, 82 percent).
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Thursday, January 10 at the Alma Grace McDonough Center against Alderson-Broaddus College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
