Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team fell 76-66 on Saturday afternoon to West Virginia Wesleyan College on the road at the Rockefeller Center in Buckhannon, W.Va.
The Wheeling Jesuit (5-10, 2-9 WVIAC) stat sheet was balanced as
Jaila Bryant led the offense with 16 points.
Emily Robinson followed with 15 points, while
Taneka Lewis and
Jamie Sobczak finished with 12 points apiece.
Breanna Butler and
Alex Anderson rounded out the scoring with nine and two, respectively.
The Cardinals battled the Bobcats (6-8, 5-6 WVIAC) closely for the initial seven minutes of the contest, staying within three points. At 12:26, Wesleyan connected with back-to-back buckets which sparked a 10-0 run for a 19-9 advantage. The Bobcats pushed the lead to as many as 15 points when Jesuit began to narrow the margin. The Cardinals ended the first half with an 11-3 run, cutting the deficit to five points, 35-30.
After the break, Wesleyan scored the first two field goals, pushing the lead to nine points. The home squad maintained the advantage until the Cardinals pulled within two points at the 15-minute mark. Sobczak connected with a layup and Robinson followed with three consecutive free throws. Moments later,
Kelsey Pacholke intercepted an errant Bobcat pass, and Robinson knocked down a jumper to make it a two point game, 43-41. Wesleyan immediately pushed the lead back to eight points, 53-45, and held on for the win.
Brittany Maxey recorded 23 points to lead the Bobcat attack. Danesha Richardson followed with 15 points, while Kerry Conroy and Allie Brown notched 13 and 11.
Wheeling Jesuit will travel to Charleston, W.Va. on Thursday, January 24 against for a WVIAC contest against the University of Charleston. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
