Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team used the final minutes of Saturday's game to defeat the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley University, 66-64, at the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
“It was a great team win,” said Head Coach
Debbie Buff. “We played with a lot of energy and we were able to close out a tight game which will hopefully provide some momentum for our two tough road games.”
The Cardinals (5-7, 2-6 WVIAC) were led by
Jamie Sobczak's 22 points and 9-for-16 (56 percent) effort from the field which included a 2-for-3 performance from downtown (67 percent).
Taneka Lewis and
Breanna Butler followed with double digits. Lewis recorded 11 points on 3-of-6 (50 percent) while Butler notched 10 points on a 4-for-4 effort from the free throw line.
Kelsey Pacholke added eight points, while
Jaila Bryant tallied five.
Emily Robinson and
Alex Anderson each had four, while
Taylor Lubinsky rounded out the scoring with two points.
“We did a much better job in the second half,” said Coach Buff. “Our defense caused 17 turnovers and our interior defense did a much better job on their two post players, who scored 31 of their 37 first half points.”
Wheeling Jesuit opened the game with a 4-0 run, and led by as many as five points by the 17:28 mark, 9-4. The Fighting Scots (0-12, 0-8 WVIAC) tied the game two minutes later, 10-10, with a 6-1 run, and went on the claim the lead at 12-10. Jesuit immediately evened the scoreboard, 12-12, and a see-saw battle began. The two teams traded buckets for seven minutes before Ohio Valley began to pull away with the lead. The Fighting Scots used a 5-0 run to establish a 29-26 advantage, and closed out the half with a 37-33 lead.
After the break, the Fighting Scots continued to control the scoreboard until the Jesuit offense ignited with a 14-1 run, establishing a 56-49 advantage. The outburst was sparked by Bryant's drive through the lane, and was capped by a Sobczak jumper. OVU retaliated with a 7-0 run to capture a 61-60 lead with 2:12 left to play. On the ensuing possession, Lewis gave Jesuit the one point advantage, however, the Fighting Scot's fired back with a pair of field goals for a 64-62 advantage with 48-seconds remaining.
Lewis, again, came through for the Cardinals with an old fashion 3-point play, giving the Cardinals a 65-64 advantage. With 20 seconds on the clock, Pacholke knocked down a free throw, lifting the Cardinals to the 66-64 victory.
The Cardinals will travel to Shepherdstown, W.Va. on Monday, January 14 for a league contest with Shepherd University. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
