Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team (3-4, 1-3) fell 81-73 to the Rams of Shepherd University (3-5, 2-2) on Wednesday evening at the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
Breanna Butler led Wheeling Jesuit with a game-high 24 points, draining 9-out-of-15 shot attempts from the floor which included a 6-for-10 showing from downtown.
Emily Robinson and
Jamie Sobczak followed with 12 and 10, respectively, while
Alex Anderson and
Kelsey Pacholke tallied seven points apiece.
The Rams opened the game with a two-point bucket, and Jesuit responded with a trifecta from Butler. On the third possession of the game, Shepherd recorded two more points, and followed with a 10-3 run to establish an early 16-8 advantage. The Rams pushed the lead to as many as nine, 21-12, before Jesuit retaliated with a run.
At the 10-minute mark, the Cardinals connected with three consecutive scores from Robinson, Pacholke and Sobczak which narrowed the deficit to 21-19. Shephered retaliated with a mini burst, taking the lead back to eight points, and Jesuit again surged with two 3-pointers, Butler and
Taylor Lubinsky, and a filed goal, Sobczak, to knot the game a 27 apiece.
During the final five minutes, the Rams outscored the Cardinals 8-2 and carried a six-point 35-29 lead into the locker room.
After the break, the game play remained the same as the Cardinals immediately cut the deficit to one point, 35-34, but Shepherd fired back for a 44-36 advantage. The Rams led by as many as 10 points, 75-65, before closing out the contest 82-73.
Shepherd received double-digit scoring efforts from five players, led by Rachel Johnson's team-high 17 points. Emily Daniel and Gabby Flinchum followed with 14 and 13, while Priscilla Moseh and Alex Weakland had 10 each.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Monday, Dec. 31 at the Alma Grace McDonough Center against Salem International University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
