Cardinal Women Fall to Pioneers

Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team (1-2, 0-1) opened West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on the road in Glenville, W.Va. on Tuesday evening. Despite scoring 86 points and receiving a 21-point effort from freshman Breanna Butler, the Cardinals fell in the conference opener 113-86 to Glenville State College (3-1, 1-0).
 
The game was back-and-forth during the initial nine minutes of play as the two teams played to a 23-23 stalemate. With 11 minutes showing on the clock, GSU's Ginny Mills connected with a long-range jumper to give the Pioneers a 26-23 advantage which sparked a 12-0 scoring drive. WJU's Jamie Sobczak ended the run by knocking down a pair of free throws.
 
Wheeling Jesuit cut the lead to nine points by the 5-minute mark, 42-33, but Glenville fired back with three field goals and a 3-pointer, establishing a 19-point lead at 56-37. The Cardinals ended the first half with an 9-1 run sparked by Alex Anderson. Jaila Bryant followed with two foul shots, and Butler ended the half with a 3-pointer and a layup, 57-46.
 
In the second half, Wheeling Jesuit cut the lead to eight points, but Glenville responded with a series of runs, leading by as many as 30 points before the buzzer sounded.
 
Butler paced the Cardinals with an 8-for-14 effort from the floor an 21 points. Bryant followed with 16 points and Sobczak added 14, while Emily Robinson and Kelsey Pacholke chipped in 10 points apiece.
 
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 1, traveling to Institute, W.Va. for their second league contest against West Virginia State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
