WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team rallied for three second-half goals to defeat Walsh University 4-3 in a steady cold rain on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
WJU put the ball into the net first, but a four-minute, three-goal run by Walsh put the Cardinals behind 3-1 at halftime. In the second half, Jesuit retaliated with a three goal assault to claim a region victory.
With the win the Cardinals improved to 11-7 overall, while the Cavaliers fell to 3-13 overall. During the halftime period, Wheeling Jesuit honored their six seniors which included:
Sam Bauman,
Philip Mshelbwala,
Eric Ketterer,
Dominic Welsh,
Cody Coven and
Victor Picchio.
In the first half, Welsh played a ball through the Cavaliers' defense to
Nicolay Netskar. Netskar capitalized on the one-on-one opportunity, and lifted the Cardinals to a 1-0 advantage. Twenty minutes later, Walsh equalized the match with a goal by Matt Bly and continued to fill the net up, establishing a 3-1 lead. Adam Greenwood and Kain Melville recorded the back-to-back goals. The Cavaliers outshot the Cardinals 7-3 and earned three corner kick opportunities in the initial 45 minutes.
After the break, Wheeling Jesuit began to attack the Cavaliers' defense, attempting 10 shots while only allowing five.
Carlos Avila ignited the comeback with goal from the top of the box after receiving the ball on a cross by Netskar at 50:24. Nine minutes later, the Cardinals equalized the contest as Mshelbwala sent a cross into the box from the left side, and
Gonzalo Arroyo was there for the finish. On the ensuing possession, and one minute elapsed off the scoreboard, Mshelbwala buried what proved to be the game winner in the lower right corner, which was set up by Netskar.
The Cardinals will host the WVIAC Quarterfinal match against Shepherd University on Tuesday, October 30 at James LaRosa Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
