Jesuit Falls in WVIAC Quarterfinal Match

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team earned the opportunity to host the first round of the WVIAC Men's Soccer Tournament. The fourth seeded Cardinals played host to #5 Shepherd University at Wheeling Island Stadium.  Jesuit won the regular season meeting, 3-1, but fell 2-0 to the Rams on Thursday evening.

In the first half, the match was mostly played in the center of the pitch as the two team battled for field position.  Shepherd managed to edge the Cardinals 6-3 in shots, and in the 39th minute, ended the scoring silence with a 40-yard effort from Kevin Doyle. Doyle received the ball at the top of the box from the midfield and floated the shot just out of the reach of WJU's keeper.
During the final six minutes of the half, the Rams fought-off Jesuit's attempt to tie the match and led 1-0 at halftime.

After the break, the Cardinals controlled the pace of play, but in the 60th minute, the Rams extended the lead to 2-0. Shepherd cleared a Jesuit attack which created a one-on-one breakaway opportunity SU's Shane Lowery. Lowery sent the shot off the crossbar, but his teammate Bruce Fugitt was there to put in the rebound.

The Cardinals continued to attack and control possession, attempting 11 shots compared to the Rams two, but unfortunately just missed the frame. The Rams held on for the 2-0 result and advanced to the semifinal round of the WVIAC Tournament with a 9-8-1 overall record and 5-4 in league play.

WJU goalkeeper Cody Thompson recorded four saves, while SU's keeper Alex Aleshire collected six.

Wheeling Jesuit finished the season 11-8 overall and 6-3 in WVIAC play.
