Late Second Half Run Lifts Golden Eagles Past Cardinals

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team hosted the WVIAC's  top-ranked Golden Eagles from the University of Charleston Wednesday evening. The Cardinals came from behind to establish a 2-1 advantage, but the unbeaten Golden Eagles surged for two goals in the final 11 minutes for a 3-2 result.

The Golden Eagles (11-1-3, 7-0 WVIAC) started the scoring in the 12th minute, shortly after receiving a free kick from a WJU (10-7, 6-3 WVIAC) foul on the left side of the box. UC's Rob Vincent sent the free kick into the box, finding Dan Walmsley, who put a header into the back of the net.

Trailing 1-0, the Cardinals attempted to push the ball down the field, but the stingy Charleston defense wouldn't let the Jesuit get the ball deep in the zone. In the 34th minute, the WJU capatalized on a free ball played from the midfield to Victor Picchio. Picchio sent the ball to Carlos Avila, who attempted to make a play, but the Charleston defense sent the ball out of bounds, setting up a WJU corner kick opportunity. Luke Roan took the set shot and sent the ball into the box, finding Ignacio Fernandez, who equalized the game,1-1, with a header on the far post.

At halftime the game remained tied at 1-1.

After the break, the Cardinals broke the stalemate in the 52nd minute as Picchio found the net. Philip Mshelbwala set up the goal by sending a cross into the center of the box. With one touch, Picchio buried the shot into the right side of the frame, and the Cardinals led 2-1.

The Cardinals seemed to be controlling the game tempo until the 80th minute. With 10:47 left to play, Charleston's Adam Hintz scored the first of two goals, establishing a 3-2 UC advantage. The first goal was off a cross from the right side from Renan Ramos. Two minutes later, Hintz touched the back of the net again on a breakaway initiated by Alexander Martinez-Gallardo.

WJU goalkeeper Cody Thompson collected two saves, while Sean Teepen from UC recorded four and the win.

The Cardinals will be back in action at the James LaRosa Soccer Complex on Saturday, October 27 against Walsh University. The regular season finale and Senor Night is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
