FINDLAY, Ohio ---The No. 19 Wheeling Jesuit Volleyball team defeated the University of Findlay 3-1 on the road Tuesday evening by scores of 25-22, 28-26, 24-26 and 25-21.
With the win Wheeling Jesuit improved to 25-2 overall, while Findlay dropped to 8-14 overall.
The Cardinals won the first two sets before dropping the third and rallying back in the fourth for their 25th victory of the season.
Allissa Ware led the offense with 12 kills, while
Jenna Pew and
Abby Wietrzykowski followed with 11 and 10, respectively. Pew added 20 assits and 14 digs to pick up a triple-double, and Ware matched her 14 digs.
Madison Strall tossed a team-best 28 assists, and
Makenzie Ripley led the defense with 16 digs.
In the first set, Findlay established the early advantage, leading by as many as four points, 13-9. The Cardinals retaliated with a 6-2 run to tie the game at 15-15. Jesuit continued to roll, flooring the next five consecutive points, extending the run to 11-2 and taking control of the scoreboard, 20-15. Wietrzykowski grounded three kills to end the set.
The following set was a back-and-forth battle, and the two teams needed extra time to decide the winner. Jesuit opened with a three-point 5-2 advantage, but the home squad quickly closed the gap and the see-saw battle began. The Cardinals and the Oilers traded blows to 26-26, and two Findlay attacking errors ended the set in Jesuit's favor.
The third frame mirrored the second set, however, two WJU errors ended the set in the Oilers favor. The Final stanza, Jesuit held a slight lead until it surged for three points to take a 21-20 advantage.
Corrin Early pounded out the next point, and Jesuit finished the match with a 4-1 run.
The Cardinals will be back in action on the road in Shepherdstown, W.Va. Friday evening. The WVIAC contest with Shepherd University is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
