In the Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer regular season finale, senior midfielder, Ashley McGinnis netted two unassisted goals in a 2-1 overtime victory over the Seton Hill University Griffins in Greensburg, PA on Wednesday evening.
Seton Hill started the scoring early when Amber Mondock found Brenna O'Leary with 5:12 showing on the game clock to take a 1-0 advantage. Despite being outshot 9-2 in the first half, the Cardinals were aggressive and McGinnis proved it as she buried the equalizer in the 20th minute, sending the teams into the locker room at a 1-1 stalemate.
After the break, the two teams battled back and forth as Seton Hill attempted 11 shots compared to Wheeling Jesuit's three. The Cardinals had only two shot opportunities in the second half and one in the overtime periods to take the lead, but eventually capitalized on their final attempt in the 104th minute. McGinnis ended the match as she sent the game winner into the back of the net, lifting the Cardinals to a 2-1 WVIAC victory.
Goalkeeper Jennifer Fletcher earned the win, collecting nine saves while Bethany Winter recorded two saves for the Griffins.
With the win, the Cardinals finished regular season play 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the WVIAC which currently ranks the sixth in the league. The Cardinals will be awaiting the outcome of the Charleston and Ohio Valley match to determine their playoff position. A Charleston loss will provide WJU with a bid to postseason play.
