Taneka Lewis, a guard on the women, basketball team, was selected as the Wheeling Jesuit Female Athlete of the Week for last second heroics to lift the Cardinals to a WVIAC victory.
Lewis, a sophomore from Akron, Ohio, recorded 18 points against Alderson-Broaddus College, shooting 8-for-16 from the floor and 2-for-4 from the foul line. In addition, she pulled down five rebounds, dished out three assists, and had two steals.
After Jesuit built a 17-point first half lead, the battlers charged back in the second half, tying the game 51-51 with 13.9 seconds remaining in the game. Lewis brought the ball up the floor, and handed the ball off to Emily Robinson. Lewis proceeded to the far corner and was left open on the baseline. Robinson found Lewis, who took three dribbles and sent a seven-foot floater in the air which touched nothing but the bottom of the net, leaving the Battlers only 2-seconds to retaliate and the Cardinals held on for a 53-51 win.
In the final game of the week, Lewis notched 11 points on a 5-for-6 performance from the field. She added seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals as the Cardinals fell on the road to Glenville State College.
