Greg Schmitt enters his first season as the Head Track & Field Coach for the Cardinals during the 2025-26 school year. Schmitt brings with him over 19 years of coaching experience at the high school and college level, as he takes over as the fifth head coach in program history.
"It's an honor to be selected as the new Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at Wheeling University," said Schmitt. "I'm looking forward to continuing the success that both programs have had in the past seasons and working hard to achieve individual and team goals this upcoming season."
Schmitt comes to the Cardinals after spending two seasons with La Roche University as the team's Men's and Women's Head Cross Country Coach. During his time with the Redhawks, Schmitt helped grow both program's roster numbers, getting to as many as 10 on the women's side and nine on the men's side. He also served as the meet coordinator for the La Roche Cross Country Invitational during both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. During the 2022 season, Schmitt would help lead the Women's team to a 4th place finish at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships, while the Men's Cross Country team placed 7th during the 2023 season.
Prior to La Roche, Schmitt spent two seasons as the Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach at Penn State Greater Allegheny, where he was tasked with building both programs from the ground up. He would lead the Nittany Lions to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Track & Field National Championship in his first season, having seven USCAA medalists and two USCAA National Champions. He began his collegiate coaching career at Carlow University, where he spent five seasons as the Head Cross Country and Track & Field coach. He would begin the inaugural Celtics Track & Field team and brought in 50 athletes for the program's inaugural season. He has had a history of building programs from the ground up and looks to grow both the Wheeling Cross Country and Track & Field programs.
As a student-athlete, Schmitt competed for two years as a member of the Track & Field team at Youngstown State University. While with the Penguins, Schmitt helped lead the team to its first-ever Indoor Horizon League Championship title during the 2003 season. He would place 5th as a member of the 4X400 meter relay team that season, before signing on with the BROOKS ID program. During his running career, Schmitt was a four-time qualifier for the USA 15K National Championships for the seeded race and also qualified for the USA 25K National Championship for the seeded race. He was also a two-time State Games of America (SGA) National Champion.
Schmitt graduated from Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice. He is excited to get started and is preparing the Cross Country and Track & Field teams for the start of the 2025-2026 athletic season.
