Trace Sechrest

    Defensive Graduate Assistant - Outside Linebackers
Trace Sechrest enters his third season on Zac Bruney's Wheeling University Football staff as a Graduate Assistant and Outside Linebackers Coach in 2024. Sechrest has served as a student assistant for each of the last two seasons, helping with the defensive line.

During the 2023 season, Sechrest was once again working with the Cardinal's defensive lineman, who finished the year with 19.0 total sacks and 64.0 tackles for loss. Under his watch, Caleb Grant would earn Second Team All-MEC honors for the first time in his career. Sechrest has also taken on an essential role leading off-season workouts on campus with the local athletes as they prepare to get back on the field in the fall.

Sechrest assisted in coaching a defensive line in 2021 that got after the quarterback with 20.0 sacks and 67.0 tackles for loss. Under his watch, Brandon Munoz earned Second Team All-MEC in 2022, the third All-MEC honor of his career. As well as coaching the defensive line, Sechrest is also essential in running film sessions and preparing the team each week.

Prior to joining the Wheeling coaching staff, Sechrest played two seasons under Head Coach Zac Bruney during his freshman and sophomore seasons. He made his collegiate debut against Frostburg State on October 16th, 2021, where he registered three solo tackles. He would finish his career with 3.0 total tackles before getting into coaching full-time.

Sechrest graduated from Wheeling in May of 2024, and is currently pursuing his MBA. He played his high school football at Bellaire High School. He is the son of Jenny and Mike Sechrest.
