Wrestling Practice RoomWhen Wheeling Jesuit University added wrestling as their 21
st sport in December of 2012, it was the birth of the Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling Program. There became an immediate need for a wrestling room where the team could train in the fall of 2013. The facility, on the 2
nd floor of the Alma Grace McDonough Center, was orchestrated by, then Athletic Director, Danny Sancomb and Head Wrestling Coach Sean Doyle. It began as a state of the art 5,000 square foot area, intended to provide space for the new wrestling program to train. With customized Resilite wall padding and mats branded with WJU logos and coloring, the room immediately established the focus on school pride and team. The room is equipped with a surround sound stereo system providing great energy during daily workouts and a wide array of cardio equipment for the demands of the sport. With great natural lighting overlooking the playing fields of campus, it provided the training grounds for WJU Wrestling to excel.
In the spring of 2014, discussions began on the expansion of the current wrestling facility due to the growth of the team. Athletic Director Frank Bauer moved forward with the expansion project and in the fall of 2014 the room grew to just under 10,000 square feet. The current room is a dedicated wrestling room, providing one of the best facilities in the country for wrestlers to train year round.
In its 2
nd year of existence, Wheeling Jesuit University has made the commitment to help Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling compete at the national level. The facility will continue to evolve and provide the best training opportunities for those seeking to win a national championship while at Wheeling Jesuit.Â
