Wheeling, W. Va. – It was a full weekend of volleyball inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center as the Wheeling University Volleyball team hosted their Hall of Fame/Alumni Tournament. On Sunday, the All-Tournament team was announced and two Cardinals were members of the eight woman team. Sophomore Camryn Matus and freshman Isabella Faro each earned their spot after putting together strong weekends that led their team to a 2-1 record.
The Cardinals would open the tournament in style on Friday night when they welcomed in CAL-U in the first of three matchups for the team with alumni on the opposite side of the net. The Cardinals and Vulcans went back and forth throughout the night, trading punches to force a fifth set. That fifth set would go to a win-by-two scenario, and it would be Wheeling that would get the upper hand on their way to a 3-2 win. Off the court, the 2015 Volleyball National Championship team was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the annual induction ceremony on Saturday morning and the Cardinals were back in the gym at noon to face Ursuline. Wheeling rode the momentum of their five set win the night prior, picking up a 3-0 sweep of the Arrows to move to 2-0 on the weekend. The nightcap would see the Cardinals face their toughest challenge against UINDY, whose Head Coach Haley Case was a member of the National Championship squad. The Cardinals would end up falling 3-0 to round out the weekend, and finished the tournament 2-1.
The first honoree for the Cardinals was Matus, who has bend a staple on offense for the team over the last two seasons. She knocked down 36 kills across the weekend on 85 total attacks, while positing a .305 hitting percentage throughout the weekend. She would add to that three assists, five digs, and seven block assists, filling in during all three phases of the game. Her top performance would come in the five set win against CAL-U, where Matus set her career high with 20 kills while holding a .410 hitting percentage. It was a career high for Matus in kills, with six of those 20 kills coming in the fifth set win. Matus leads the Cardinals with 57 kills and sits second with a .288 hitting percentage as she looks to continue being a leader for the Cardinal's offense throughout the season.
The second honoree for the Cardinals was Isabella Faro, who made her home debut with the Cardinals this weekend. Across the three games, Faro would finish the weekend with 35 kills on 104 total attacks while holding a .125 hitting percentage. The freshman would finish with her second double-double of the season in the opening match, knocking down a career-best 18 kills to go along with 19 digs in the five set win. She would lead the Cardinals in kills in two of the three matches, and sits right behind Matus for the team lead in kills with 55. Defensively, she sits third on the team with 58 digs through 20 sets played, averaging 2.90 digs per set. Faro has burst onto the scene during her freshman season, and looks to continue that success throughout the season.
