Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University women's soccer team returns to the road Wednesday evening when the Cardinals travel to West Virginia State University for a Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup at 6 p.m. Wheeling enters the contest at 0-7 overall and 0-5 in MEC play following Sunday's 7-2 loss to Fairmont State, while West Virginia State comes in at 3-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.

The Cardinals showed some offensive momentum against the Falcons despite the final result, scoring twice after Fairmont State opened the game with a 2-0 lead. Lily Hanna got Wheeling on the board in the 36th minute off an assist from Jeanery Diaz, before Graceylyn Hanna found the back of the net in the 64th minute to tie the game at two. Fairmont State would score five unanswered goals over the final 20 minutes.

West Virginia State has been on a strong run over its last four matches, winning three and tying the other. The Yellow Jackets opened that stretch with a 4-0 road victory over Shawnee State on Sept. 9 before playing Charleston to a 2-2 draw on Sept. 13. WVSU then defeated Concord 2-1 on Sept. 16 before closing the stretch with a 3-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday.

West Virginia State's latest victory featured a pair of goals from Leila Karam, who scored in the 24th and 89th minutes, while Kaylee Smith added a goal in the 72nd minute. Cali Questel and Sharon Freire Omonigho each recorded an assist in the victory. The Yellow Jackets controlled the match offensively, finishing with 27 shots and nine shots on goal compared to nine shots and three shots on goal for West Virginia Wesleyan. Celina Seggelmann made two saves in the win.

Wednesday will mark the sixth meeting between Wheeling and West Virginia State, with the Yellow Jackets holding a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series. Wheeling will look to use the offensive production from Sunday's matchup and carry that momentum down to Institute.
