The Wheeling Men's Swimming team get their 2026/27 schedule underway in September this year, as they travel to Salem on the 26th for a relay meet to kick off what will be a big year for the Cardinals. Head Coach Will Hughes has added a host of new Swimmers to the roster this year, following a record setting year for the Cardinals last season.
Wheeling took second in the MEC Championships in February, with Segmen Duygun the highlight of the meet as he knocked 10.68 seconds off his best in the 1000 yard freestyle to finish with a time of 9:42.44. He would come third out of the MEC/GMAC in the event, and would better that in the 500 freestyle finals where he took home second place with another personal best of 4:39.27.Â
Another standout for the Cardinals last year was Archie Pigott. The Englishman would take first in 9 races last season, including a hat-trick of firsts in the meeting against Bethany and Fairmont State. His best performance of the year came in the MEC/GMAC Championships, where he swam a PB of 2:03.96 in the 200 Breaststroke finals to take 4th.
The Cardinals won five out of their 11 meets last year, and were ranked 1st in the MEC. Last season marked the fifth year in a row that the Cardinals have improved their national rankings, and is testament to the year on year improvements made with strong young talent coming through each year. With over 10 new additions to the roster, the Wheeling University Men's Swimming team will look to breakout on the national stage as they come up against multiple of the nations top swimmers. The Cardinals will host Lenoir-Rhyne in the McDonough natatorium on October 24th, whilst Head Coach Will Hughes has also added Catawba to the schedule in January, as the Cardinals will make the trip down to Salisbury, North Carolina. Amongst new additions to the Schedule are Indiana University of Pennsylvania on November 7th, as well as Shawnee State on January 16th.
The Cardinals will open the 2026/27 season in Salem, WV on Saturday, September 26th in a relay meet against Salem.
