Frostburg, Md. - The Wheeling Men's Lacrosse team (5-5, 4-3) traveled to Frostburg, Maryland to battle non-conference Frostburg State. The Cardinals were able to come out on top and fell to the Bobcats 17-7.
Wheeling got the night started with a goal from Zander Thomas, only a minute in. Frostburg was quick to answer with their own goal 50 seconds later. Haijianni Marin won Wheeling's first faceoff of the day, but the Bobcats were able to get the ball and score another goal. They then got their third goal in a row before Wheeling was able to score again. Wheeling got the next goal, thanks to Ayden Shepard. Frostburg got the final goal of the quarter to make it 4-2, Frostburg.
The Bobcats got things started in the second quarter with a goal a minute and a half in. Marin won the following faceoff, for Wheeling's second on the day. Andrew Turner was able to get the third goal for the Cardinals, with the help of Jack Rowe. Frostburg got the next two goals back-to-back. Wheeling won the next faceoff, but it took a little fight for them to get the next goal. Almost five minutes later, Josh Wesneski scored for the Cardinals, with the help from Shepard. After the next faceoff, Owen Worley was able to cut the gap to two with his own goal. Frostburg got the final goal of the half and went into half time 8-5, Frostburg.
The Second half started with a goal from Frostburg. They ended up holding Wheeling from scoring, and scored six more times. This gave them a lead by 10, going into the final 15 minutes.
Frostburg won the first faceoff of the quarter, but Wheeling got it back and Turner was able to put it in the back of the net. Marin won the next faceoff, and Turner got another goal for Wheeling to make it his third. The game was back and forth for the next seven minutes. Frostburg got the ball down to their end and scored. The Bobcats got the final goal of the game and won 17-7.
Turner was able to have a season high of single game goals with three. Shepard also finished with three points, and led in assists with two. Landen Martin and Riley Lincoln led defensively with Martin having six ground balls and Lincoln having two caused turnovers. Mason Malec, Dominico Catald, and Marin all split faceoffs evenly with nine. Marin won the most faceoffs with five, while Malec had two and Cataldo had one. Nate Castner also appeared for a faceoff and went 1-1. Martin was in the cage for 53 minutes and made seven saves on 22 shots. Christopher Burlingame played the final six minutes and made one save on three shots.
The Cardinals will host Malone on Wednesday, April 15th at 4 PM for their senior night.
