Women’s Rugby Set for National Stage Run at 2026 CRC National 7’s

Wheeling, W. Va. - After battling through their 7's season, the Wheeling University Women's Rugby team is set for the National Championship stage. The team will enter the Collegiate Rugby Championships National 7's Stage as the #5 seed in the tournament field, looking for their first-ever 7's National title. The run begins on Saturday, April 25th, when they take on the #4 seeded West Chester University with kick-off scheduled for 9:20 AM.

The 7's regular season saw the Cardinals play through three tournaments during the season, and finished the year with a 10-2 record heading into tournament play. The team began the year at the Valley 7's where they ran through pool play with a perfect 3-0 record. Their only loss of the tournament would come in the championship match, where they fell to the John Marshall Gold team 27-12. They would then head to the Cavalier 7's Tournament a week later, and once again found success through the pool play schedule. Wheeling would score a combined 135 points, and added a 33-7 win over Michigan in the semifinals. It was only in the championship, when they fell to Davenport 29-0 that their day would come to an end. Their final tournament of the regular season took them to the 7's in the Swamp Tournament, where they would play in round robin action, going a perfect 3-0 on the day.

Despite having a younger team in toe for this year's 7's tournament, the Cardinals have senior leadership that will look to guide the way throughout tournament play. Leading that group of veterans is senior captain Alexis Dallas, who is coming off her best tournament of the season at 7's in the Swamp. Dallas would account for 15 points on the day, scoring three tries, with her best effort coming in the final game against Kent State. Dallas also is a leader on the defensive side, serving as the leading tackler for a Cardinal defense that has given up just 9.08 points per game this season. Joining her as a veteran on the offensive side of the ball is Liz Sinatra, who has used her speed to get up and down the sidelines. Sinatra scored two tries in the opening game of Swamp in the 7's, and has helped the Cardinals with their ball movement throughout the 7's season.

Behind them is a group of underclassmen, who look to make an impact in their first-ever run on the National Stage. Leading the charge is freshman Emerson Callegari, who has made her presence felt throughout 7's season. Her breakout performance came at the Cavalier 7's, when she went off for 40 points in the game, helping the Cardinals to a 4-1 record. She shined during the 15's season and has continued that success into 7's season. At 7's in the Swamp, the Cardinals saw some of their depth pieces make their debut and made the most of their opportunities. Ella Barker and Milena Hammons would each take advantage of their opportunity, scoring their first tries of the 7's season in the first game of the day.

While the men's side of the CRC National 7's Tournament kicked off on Friday, the women take the field for the first time Saturday, with a maximum of two games on day one, followed by two more games on day two. The Cardinals enter the tournament as the #5 seed in the tournament, and will match-up with #4 seeded West Chester. The road to the program's first-ever 7's National title will not be an easy one for the Cardinals, with the winner of their first-round match-up set to face the winner of #1 Brown and #8 UCONN. Last season, the Cardinals would advance to the quarterfinal round of the tournament, before they fell to AIC to make their exit from the championship bracket. This season, the Cardinals are looking to get past that Quarterfinal round, and make a push for their first-ever 7's National title.

The Match-up

The Cardinals and Golden Rams kick-off the CRC National 7's with their second meeting in program history, with Wheeling leading the all-time series at 1-0. It will be the second time that the two teams have met in 7's play, and the first time that the two teams are meeting on the postseason stage. Wheeling would score 27 points in the first meeting between the two teams, and they look to continue their scoring success.

The first meeting between the two teams came back on March 2nd, 2025, in a game that the Cardinals would win 27-7. Former Cardinal Alli Davis would lead the way in the effort, scoring two tries and putting up 10 points in the winning effort. Three other Cardinals would score tries in the effort, rounding out what was a big scoring day for the offense.
