Wheeling, W. Va- The Wheeling University Softball team (8-30), (3-13) hosted the Glenville State Pioneers this afternoon for a Mountain East Conference (MEC) doubleheader. The Pioneers took the win in both games, coming out on top 8-0 in five innings in game one and 4-1 in game two.
Game One: Glenville- 8 Wheeling- 0
The Pioneers came out swinging from their first at-bat and refused to let up. Glenville State recorded at least one hit in every inning except for the second inning when the Cardinals tallied the three outs in order. The Wheeling defense held GSU off the scoreboard until the top of the third when the Pioneers hit a two-RBI home run for a 2-0 lead. Glenville continued to flex their offense in the fourth as they recorded four runs on four hits to stretch the lead out to 6-0. The Pioneers added two more runs in the top of the fifth to make the final score 8-0. However, the Cardinals showed some life in the bottom of the fifth as Grace Mummery ended the no-hitter bid for Glenville with a single out to center field.
Grace Mummery recorded the only hit for the Cardinals, going 1-2 at the plate and Denise Carrillo drew a walk. Kaylin Shields pitched 4.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts.
Game Two: Glenville- 4 Wheeling- 1
After each team was sat down in order in the first inning, Glenville got on the board first with an RBI-double and an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers brought in one run in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Wheeling offense would not be able to produce until the bottom of the fifth, but they made the most of it, tallying four hits in a row. KeKe Warrix drove the ball to the shortstop to get the first hit of the game for her squad. Eden Troxel followed her up with a hit of her own, then the hit from Ava Kresak that went out into right field brought Warrix home to make it 4-1. Mikaela Holp loaded the bases with a single, but the Cardinals could not get their runners home in time before the third out.
Wheeling picked up where they had left off as Grace Mummery opened the bottom of the sixth with a first pitch single. Mackenzie Burns followed in her footsteps as she belted the ball for a hit and was able to advance to second after a throwing error by the Pioneers' right fielder. Denise Carrillo drew a walk, but Wheeling was unable to manufacture runs and would result in the final score of 4-1.
Grace Mummery, MacKenzie Burns, KeKe Warrix, Eden Troxel, Ava Kresak, and Mikaela Holp each recorded one hit. Ryleigh Peters pitched 7.0 innings and recorded two strikeouts.
The Wheeling University Softball team returns to action on Saturday, April 18th when take on West Virginia Wesleyan on the road.
