Wheeling, W. Va. - It was a week of overtime action for the Wheeling University Women's Basketball team (12-10, 7-7) as they went 1-1 on the floor. On Monday, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) released their weekly Player of the Week honors, presented by the Healthplan, and it was the Cardinal's offensive leader during the week who was honored. Senior Kenzie Dalton was named the MEC Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week, splitting the honor with Fairmont State's Gabby Reep.
Dalton was the conference's leading scorer this past week, finishing with 54 points across the two games, while adding a double-double in the overtime win over Davis & Elkins on Saturday. She would shoot 45% (18-40) from the floor during the week and helped the Cardinal seal games late from the charity stripe, where she went 17-23 (73.9%). She would eclipse the 25-point mark in each of her games during the week and is riding a three-game streak where she has scored 20 or more points in a game. Her success continued onto the defensive side, where she finished with 13 rebounds and eight steals during the week, helping the Cardinal defense hold the opposition to 61.5 points per game. She rounded out the week as the Cardinal's leader in the passing game, finishing with eight assists to cap off the week.
Her biggest effort would come against Davis & Elkins, where she picked up her second double-double of the season. She led the way with a season-best 28 points in the effort, while finishing with a team-best 10 rebounds in the effort. She would get nearly half of her 28 points from the charity stripe, where she went 10-15 (66.7%). She started the week with a 26-point effort against West Virginia Wesleyan, where she finished with three rebounds and five assists to start the week. Over this three-game swing, Dalton has averaged 25.6 PPG, as she gets closer and closer to the 1000 career point mark, needing just 73 more points to reach the plateau.
With Kenzie Dalton earning the MEC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors, Wheeling University has now had 32 student-athletes earn Conference Player of the Week honors. She brings home the second award for the Wheeling Women's Basketball team this season, with Dalton taking home both of those honors. She is the third athlete to be honored this week, joining Men's Basketball Player Caleb Murray and Baseball Player Edward Mateo in being honored.
The Wheeling University Women's Basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, February 11th, when they hit the road to face Fairmont State with tip-off at 5:30 PM.
