Wheeling, W. Va- The Wheeling University Softball team (0-1), (0-0) opened their season on day one of "The Highlands Classic" against the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds. The Cardinals were unable to keep up with the Greyhounds' offense and fell by a final score of 16-0.
UINDY jumped out to a 6-0 run at the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, Keke Warrix was able to make contact with the ball, and because she beat the throw, the Greyhounds shortstop was given an error, which gave Wheeling their first base runner of the game. Following Warrix, freshman Mackenzie Burns dug into the box and recorded her first career hit, a single out to center field that advanced Warrix to second. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on the base runners, and the inning ended.
The Greyhounds continued to flex their offense, adding three more runs in the second. UINDY retired the side, and then added four more runs in the third inning to make it 13-0. Burns drew a walk on the first at-bat of the fourth inning, so Mikaela Holp subbed in as the pinch runner on the base paths. Holp saw an opportunity to steal second, and that she did successfully, marking her first career stolen base. Eden Troxel drew the second walk of the fourth, and just like Holp, she picked up her first career steal, which put two runners in scoring position. Despite this, Wheeling struck out looking, and the game moved to the fifth inning. UINDY closed out the action when they added three runs for a final score of 16-0.
Mackenzie Burns recorded the only hit for the Cardinals, going 1-1 at the plate for a single and drawing a walk. Eden Troxel led the Cards with seven put-outs. Troxel and Mikaela Holp stole one base each. Kaylin Shields led the Cardinal pitchers with three strikeouts while Ryleigh Peters and Maria Clark each struck out one batter.
The Wheeling University Softball team will enter day two of "The Highlands Classic" tomorrow and will take on the IUP Crimson Hawks at 5:30pm.
