Wheeling, W. Va. - With the spring season in full force, inclement weather makes its first impact on the Wheeling University Baseball team's (2-1, 0-0) early season schedule. Due to inclement weather in the Virginia State University area this week, the team has announced time changes for its upcoming three-game weekend set. The two teams will now meet in doubleheader action on Saturday, February 14th, beginning at noon, and will play their series finale in a single, nine-inning, game on Sunday, February 15th, to wrap up the weekend.
The schedule change flips the day of the doubleheader, allowing the Cardinals to leave Petersburg, Virginia earlier on Sunday. The Cardinals are coming off of a three-game season opening series against the University of South Carolina at Beaufort, where the team took two out of three to start the season. The Cardinals scored a combined 30 runs across the three-game series, saving their best performance for last with a 17-run outburst in the series finale. They started the weekend with an 8-5 win, helped out by a dominant first five innings of play that saw them jump out to an 8-2 lead. Game two saw the Cardinals once again get out to an early lead, before USC Beaufort rallied late to earn a 16-5 win. The series finale would be the biggest offensive day for both teams, and the Cardinals would outlast the Sandsharks 17-12.
The Cardinals and Virginia State would open their three-game series on Saturday, February 14th, when they play game one of their doubleheader with first pitch at noon.
