Women’s Soccer Picks Up First Win of Season

Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University women's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2026 season Wednesday evening, shutting out Shawnee State 3-0 at Bishop Schmitt Field. The Cardinals scored once in the first half before adding two more goals in the second to move to 1-10-1 overall and 1-8-1 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play.

Wheeling opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Lily Hanna found the back of the net for her third goal of the season. The Cardinals carried the 1-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Bears 5-4, with Alba Lopez Guerrero making two saves to keep Shawnee State off the board.

The Cardinals added to their lead just under three minutes into the second half when Maira Alevato scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Rayana Wilson. Wheeling continued to apply pressure throughout the second half, finishing with 12 shots after halftime and nine shots on goal overall.

Wheeling put the game away in the 87th minute when Nyah Smith scored her first goal of the season, with Hanna providing the assist. The Cardinals finished the afternoon with a 17-6 advantage in shots and held Shawnee State to just three shots on goal, while Lopez Guerrero recorded three saves for her first shutout of the season. Hanna finished with a goal and an assist, while Alevato added a goal and two shots on goal.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday, October 11, when they travel to take on Glenville State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
