Wheeling, W. Va. — The Wheeling University women's soccer team returns to Bishop Schmitt Field Wednesday evening when the Cardinals host Shawnee State University in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) matchup at 4 p.m. The contest marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs, with Wheeling entering at 0-10-1 overall and 0-8-1 in MEC play and Shawnee State coming in at 1-7-2 overall and 1-6-2 in conference action.
The Cardinals are coming off a 3-1 loss to Charleston Sunday at Bishop Schmitt Field. Charleston scored just over four minutes into the contest and added two more goals in the second half, but Wheeling continued to battle and broke through in the 83rd minute when
Lily Hanna scored her second goal of the season. Hanna led the Cardinals with six shots and three shots on goal, while
Jeanery Diaz added two shots and one on frame.
Alba Lopez Guerrero made six saves in goal.
Shawnee State enters Wednesday's matchup looking to snap a three-match losing streak, with each of its last three losses coming against teams Wheeling has also faced this season. The Bears fell 2-0 to West Liberty on Sept. 27 and 2-0 to No. 20 Fairmont State on Sept. 30, while Wheeling fell to those same teams by 2-0 and 7-2, respectively. Shawnee State's other recent loss came against Point Park, which also defeated the Cardinals 2-0 earlier this season.
Wheeling will look to make the most of its second straight home contest and carry the offensive pressure it has shown in recent matches into Wednesday's matchup. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
