Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University Volleyball team completed a Homecoming Weekend sweep this past weekend, winning all six sets between Concord and Shawnee State. The team was rewarded on Monday when the Mountain East Conference (MEC) released their weekly Player of the Week awards, presented by The Healthplan. Wheeling would sweep the weekly honors, with Camryn Matus earning the MEC Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, while Mara McDougal took home the MEC Defensive Player of the Week award.
Camryn Matus takes home her first MEC Player of the Week award this season, after finishing with double-doubles in two of her three matches during the week. The sophomore would finish with 32 kills on 67 total attacks, finishing with a hitting percentage of .403 for the week. She would hit .345 or better in each of the three matches, with her best hitting percentage coming in the finale against Shawnee State. She would finish with eight kills on 16 total attacks against the Bears, while committing just one attack error for a .438 hitting percentage. While she has been the Cardinal's top attacker, she has also been filling in as the second setter, and added 47 assists and 18 digs to round out her week. Matus has finished with double digit assists in 13 of her last 14 matches. Matus has racked up eight double-doubles this season, with all eight of those coming during that 14-match stretch.
Mara McDougal is also earning her first MEC Player of the Week award as she handled the primary libero duties for the Cardinals during the week. Across the three matches, McDougal would finish with 42 digs, averaging 3.82 digs/set during the week. Along with her back line success, she added seven assists and one service ace as she rounded out a strong week at libero. Her top performance would come against Shawnee State in the finale, when she finished with 15 digs, two assists, and one service ace in the effort. McDougal sits fifth in the conference with 338 digs and fourth in the conference with 4.47 digs/set. She has been the primary libero for the Cardinals this season and she looks to continue that back line success down the playoff stretch.
With Matus and McDougal sweeping the weekly Volleyball awards, the Wheeling University Athletic Department has now had 12 student-athlete win Conference Player of the Week honors. Matus and McDougal are the first Wheeling Volleyball players to be honored this season, and the first since McDougal last won the honor back on October 6, 2025. Last week, Wheeling Men's Swimmer Nikola Zhekov would take home the MEC Men's Swimmer of the Week honor.
The Wheeling University Volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, October 20, when they travel to Fairmont State with first serve at 7 PM.
