Wheeling Loses Close One in Road MEC Contest

Elijah Stark - SID Graduate Assistant

Fairmont WV. - The Wheeling University Women's swimming team (6-4, 1-3) lost a tightly contested road matchup against Fairmont State. With only 5 points separating these two at the WV state games we knew it was going to be close. Ultimately, the home team was able to win the matchups and take the victory.

Giulia Liberti put together a strong showing, winning two golds. Liberti is the best in the MEC at Breaststroke, she has the best 50 and 100 times and the second best 200 Breaststroke time. Today was no different, she won the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:11.66 beating 2nd place by almost 3 seconds. She also swam the breaststroke leg in the 200 Medley relay where she, Niki Chrysafi, Lydie Sprecher, and Caitlin Oltman took 1st place finishing in 1:55.24.

Fairmont State's stars were able to outshine Wheeling's which is what ultimately led to Fairmont States's Victory. Both teams have 4 swimmers ranked in the top 10 of the MEC. All 4 of Fairmont State's top 10 swimmers were able to come away with a 1st place finish whereas only Wheeling's Giulia Liberti and Gabby Baiano were able to secure 1st place finishes. Baiano's first place finish came in the 500 Free (5:31.27), and was also the anchor in Wheeling's 2nd place 200 freestyle relay team.

Wheeling will have the opportunity to avenge this loss in their next meet on January 23rd when Fairmont State travels to Wheeling for Wheeling's Senior night. The meet includes Bethany College as well and starts at 6PM.
