Fairmont WV. - The Wheeling University Men's swimming team (8-2, 4-1) got back on track with a conference win against Fairmont State. Wheeling's 4 swimmers ranked in the top 10 in the conference who competed today all took home an individual 1st place finish and were a big reason for the win.
Segmen Duygun had a strong night with 3 top 2 finishes. Duygun finished 1st in the 1000 Free (10:25.40), and 2nd in the 100 Fly (55.82). The 100 Fly was a very strong event for the Cardinals where they took the top 4 spots. Meiko Schonekes beat out Duygun in the event with a 54.85. Quintin Tayali and Nate Reigel took 3rd and 4th with times of 56.39 and 57.66 respectively. Duygun also led off the 200 Freestyle Relay where he and Quintin Tayali, EJ Cooper, and Tom Currie finished 2nd with a time of 1:32.91. After today's performance Duygun is now the 3rd ranked swimmer in the MEC.
The 50 Free was also a strong event for the Cardinals, despite not taking first place Wheeling swimmers took 2nd-5th. Aris Dimakis, Nathaniel Olivares, Quintin Tayali, and Patrick Kirby all finished between 22.28 and 23.14. Wheeling also asserted their dominance in the 20th event of the night, the 100 breaststroke, taking all the top 4 spots. Archie Pigott won the event (1:01.16) and Efe Cucuk (1:02.51), Matthew Charlesworth (1:04.53), and Levi Parker (1:09.33) finished right behind.
Fairmont state will head to Wheeling on January 23rd for Wheeling's Senior Night which starts at 6PM.
