Allendale, MI. - The Wheeling Volleyball team (0-7, 0-0) traveled to Grand Valley State University for another non-conference match-up. On Friday, September 12, Wheeling played Hillsdale College and Grand Valley State in a double header, but would drop both match ups. The Cardinals would play their final game of the tournament against Tiffin University, but would leave Allendale, Michigan 0-3.
Wheeling opened up strong in the first set with keeping the score close the whole time. Tiffin would get the first two points of the match, but the Cardinals would answer back with a kill by Camryn Matus. Tiffin would gain three more points to make it a 5-1 lead, but the Cardinals would close the gap with two more points. It would be a back and forth game, with the Dragons leading, until a kill by Olivia Batch would tie up the set 16-16. The Cardinals would keep the score tied up until Tiffin had two, two point runs to win the set 25-22.
The Cardinals would open the second set by scoring the first point off of a kill from Cami Black. Wheeling would have the lead for a small amount until Tiffin had a three point run to take the lead 4-2. The Cardinals would be able to tie the game up at 6-6, but would slowly lose the lead after Tiffin had another three point run. They would continue to score off of kills by Katie Wilking, Faith Keifer, Camryn Matus, and Cami Black, but would fall short 25-16 to give Tiffin a 2-0 lead.
Tiffin would open the third set with a 4-0 lead. The Cardinals would be able to get two points to close the gap, but the Dragons would answer back with two more points to keep a four point difference. The Cardinals would have a three point run to catch up and make the score 5-6, but would quickly fall back into a four point difference after Tiffin had their very own three point run. The game would be very back and forth as Wheeling would answer back to Tiffin, but Tiffin would continue to keep the point difference. The Cardinals would end up falling short to the Dragons again with the final score being 25-21.
The Cardinals would leave Allendale, Michigan 0-3. Despite their efforts, Cami Black would lead the Cardinals with 10 kills. Katie Wilking and Camyrn Matus would be right behind her with nine and eight kills. Faith keifer led the team in assists with 25, and Megan Platt would record a team-high of 18 digs.
The Cardinals will be back on the court Thursday, September 18, to open the Wheeling Invitational at 7 PM in the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
