Wheeling Baseball Places Two on All-MEC Baseball List

Wheeling, W. Va. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Mountain East Conference (MEC) announced their annual Baseball All-MEC honors. After wrapping up their season on Sunday, the Wheeling University Baseball team would have two players recognized for their work this season. Outfielder Brett Johnson and starting pitcher Sebastian Khan each earned Honorable Mention honors after leading their respective sides of the ball.

For Johnson, it is his first All-MEC honor after he joined the Cardinals for his first season in 2025. The junior was the Cardinal's most consistent hitter atop the lineup, finishing with the team's highest average among eligible players at .305, while finishing with one home run and 15 RBI. He also sat second on the team with his .405 on-base percentage and added eight stolen bases on 13 attempts, sitting second behind the program's all-time stolen base leader Nic Ancelet. Johnson would have 10 multi-hit games at the top of the Cardinal's lineup this season, including a career-best 3-5 effort with a pair of RBI against Bethany on April 17th. Of his 40 hits during the season, 11 of them went for extra bases, and he looks to continue being a sparkplug for the Cardinals into the 2026 season.

Khan is also earning the first All-MEC honor of his career after making the transition from a relief pitcher to a starting pitcher during the 2025 season. Khan would make 10 appearances for the Cardinals, with seven of those being starts, and he pitched to a 4.17 ERA over 41.0 innings of work. It was good enough for the lowest ERA among any of the Cardinal's main four starting pitchers this season, and he added the first two complete game efforts of his career. He would finish with the team's top strikeout per innings pitched ratio among the starters, setting down 43 batters in 41.0 innings of work, while walking the fewest among that group with 17. Khan would put together the best outing of his career against Davis & Elkins on March 23rd, when he logged 7.0 shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out seven in what would be a 1-0 Wheeling win.

With the release of the All-MEC Baseball awards, the Wheeling Athletics Department now has had 53 student-athletes take home All-Conference honors during the year. Of those 53, 10 of those have been earned during the spring season, with Wheeling Men's Lacrosse being the latest team honored, with three award winners. The Cardinals earn multiple award winners for the fourth year in a row and look to continue their growth into the offseason as they try and return to the MEC Tournament field in 2026.

The Wheeling University Baseball team now heads into the offseason as they look to continue to grow their program this offseason.
