Wheeling, W. Va. - With the end of the school year approaching, the Wheeling University Athletic Department is giving a day of fun to a group of local middle school students. Wheeling Athletics will be hosting their first-ever Cardinal Athletic Day as they welcome students from Wheeling Middle School for a day of fun both inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center and on Bishop Schmitt Field. Students will get the chance to interact with Wheeling Athletics coaches and players while getting a chance to unwind from the classroom schedule.
"It is really important for us to open up our campus community and welcome the community to interact with our student athletes," said Wheeling Athletic Director Carrie Hanna. "We hold our athletes to the school's mission of life, leadership, and service with and among others and this is a way to do that while giving back to the community. We want to be Wheeling's University, and this is one of the many ways we are trying to do just that."
The day's activities will begin at 9:30 AM with teams setting up inside both Bishop Schmitt Field and the Alma Grace McDonough Center. Wheeling Football, Men's and Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Rugby, and Track & Field will be putting participants through activities on the Bishop Schmitt Field turf, helping them have fun while learning the fundamentals of the sports. Inside the gym, it will be Wheeling Volleyball and Men's and Women's Basketball taking their turn with events in shooting the basketball and the fundamentals of volleyball. After spending time on the field and in the gym in the morning, the group will go to lunch and spend some time in the pool with the Wheeling Swim team to wrap things up.
The Wheeling University Athletic Department has hosted several community engagement events throughout the year and is continuing to open its doors to the Wheeling community. The Cardinals began the year with their Trunk or Treat event in October, and added a Stuff the Truck Event and Sole Bros Shoe Drive to help give back to the local community. Wheeling University lives the mission of life, leadership, and service with and among others and is excited to be Wheeling's University.
Wheeling Cardinal Athletics Day is scheduled for Friday, April 4th, with events beginning for the students at 9:30 AM.
