Wheeling, W. Va. - For the first time since the 2018 season, the Wheeling University Softball team is back in the 2025 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Tournament Field. Before the Cardinals kick-off postseason action on Wednesday, the conference announced their year Softball awards, with the Cardinals having an honoree among the list. Sophomore outfielder Amber Morgan earned Second Team All-MEC honors, after leading the Cardinals back to the postseason.
Morgan finished the regular season as the Cardinal's leading hitter with a .414 (67-162) batting average and a 1.022 on-base plus slugging (OPS). She led the offense in batting average, OPS, On-base percentage (.466), Doubles (11), hits (67), and Total bases (90). She is also tied for the team lead in triples (3), while sitting second on the team in steals (13) and RBI (23) and sitting tied for second with two home runs this year. She has appeared in all 51 games for the Cardinals this season, starting 43 of them and has 19 multi-hit efforts this season. She has been the Cardinal's most consistent bat in the lineup, picking up at least one hit in all but 12 games this season while batting in the upper third of the Cardinal batting order.
She played an instrumental role in her team getting back to the conference tournament, putting together a perfect 3-3 effort with a home run and a career-high four RBI in the game that clinched the Cardinals the playoff spot. She would get the offense started with a two-run home run in the top of the first, and the team would never look back on their way to a 13-1 victory. Morgan's .414 average has her sitting fourth in the MEC, while her 67 hits place her third in the conference. She also sits top 10 in the conference in stolen bases, on-base percentage, and runs scored. She looks to continue to be a consistent bat in the team's MEC Tournament run as they compete for an MEC Championship.
With Morgan's honor, the Wheeling University Athletic Department has now had 48 student-athletes earn All-Conference honors this season. It is the first All-MEC honor for the team since former Cardinal Maddie Munoz took home Second Team All-MEC honors back during the 2023 season. The spring sports have now brought home six of the 48 honorees, with Women's Golf having had two All-MEC award winners and the Women's Lacrosse team having four players honored this past week.
The Wheeling University Softball team kicks off their MEC Tournament run on Wednesday, April 30th, when they take on #1S Glenville State with first pitch at 2:30 PM.
