Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Early Battle Not Enough as Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Frostburg State in Regular Season Finale

Frostburg, MD. - Through the first 15 minutes of play, the Wheeling University Women's Lacrosse team (6-7, 4-4) played an even game with the defending Mountain East Conference (MEC) Champion Frostburg State Bobcats. However, the close battle wasn't enough as the Bobcats would pull away and pick up a 22-8 win to wrap up the Cardinal's regular season schedule. Head Coach Faith Flanagan was looking for her team to play better in their second meeting with the Bobcats and they did just that as they prepare for the MEC Tournament.

Frostburg State would get on the board first, scoring just a minute and a half into the game, but the Cardinals would have an answer. After a second Bobcat shot went wide of the net, Sophia Cirone brought the ball down the field and set Jovie Noack up in front of the net. Noack would find the back of that net, and the game would sit tied at 1-1 at the 12:45 mark of the quarter. The back and forth would continue as Frostburg State scored off the ensuing draw control, and two minutes later the Cardinals would take advantage of a Bobcat turnover. Klara Domachowska picked up the groundball and took it to the net to tie the game once again at 2-2. It was the start of a three-goal swing for the Cardinals over the next six minutes as they built up their largest lead of the afternoon at 4-2. After knotting up the score, the Cardinals would begin to take their shots, firing three straight shots.

It was the third of those shots that would find the back of the net with Trinity Rose scoring a Free Position goal to give Wheeling a 3-2 lead. After a big save by Giavonni Perkins, the Cardinals would bring the ball back up the field for a successful clear. After a Bobcat yellow card, Rose would set up the offense and converted her second goal of the day to give Wheeling a 4-2 lead. It was a stark contrast from the 8-1 deficit they had in the first matchup as they continued their improvement on the field. After Back to back goals from the Bobcats tied it at 4-4, the Cardinals had one more push before the quarter ended. Rose, would win the ensuing draw control and put the Cardinals on offense. Sophia Cirone would get the ball in her stick and scored the fifth this goal of the quarter to give Wheeling a 5-4 lead.

After molding the Bobcats at Bay during the first quarter, Frostburg State found their shot The rest of the night. They would score eight second quarter goals to take a 12-6 lead heading into the halftime break. The only Cardinal goal during the quarter came from Macy Davies on an unassisted goal as the team looked to regroup in the second half. However, once the Bobcats got started they were hard to slow down as they added six more goals to extend their lead to 18-6 heading into the final 15 minutes of play. The Cardinals would Be held to four shots in the quarter, putting three of those on net. Maisy Latus, who subbed into the game at halftime, faced nine shots on net and made three saves to try and subdue the potent Bobcats. With the running clock started, the Cardinals would look to end the game strong giving them momentum into the tournament.

Frostburg State would score the first four goals of the quarter over the first 7 minutes extending their lead to 22-6. The Cardinals needed a spark and got one as Rose won the next draw control. Julia Daniels would drive towards the net and set herself up with a free position opportunity. She would convert the goal to stop the sewing drought and make it 22-7. Wheeling's final goal would come in the final minute of play following a Frostburg State turnover. Rose brought the ball over the 30-yard line for the successful, clear and found Paige Jankowski just outside the crease. Jankowski would take her shot and scored her first goal of the day to make it a 22-8 game. That is where the final score would sit as the Cardinals rounded out their regular season MEC schedule.

Leading the way for the Cardinals on both sides of the ball was Trinity Rose. She was the team leader with three goals on the day, putting all six of her shots on net. On the defensive end she added a team-high 10 Draw controls and four caused turnovers. The remaining five goals would come from five different players with Sophia Cirone, Jovie Noack, Macy Davies, Klara Domachowska, and Julia Daniels all adding a point to the scoresheet. Giavonna Perkins would get the start in net for the Cardinals making nine saves on 21 shots faced. Maisy Latus would come in for the second half and added eight saves on 18 shots faced. It was a much improved start for the Cardinals and they look to carry the momentum into the postseason.
