Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Softball team (4-28, 1-7) began there doubleheader against Frostburg State but the rains would fall down causing a halt in the action. The game was stopped in the bottom of the fifth inning with the bases loaded and two outs for the Cardinals, leading 5-2. The teams currently holding the game and are discussing rescheduling the day for a later date to be determined.
Kaylin Shields took the circle for the Cardinals and was on fire early on retiring the first six Bobcats she faced on the night. Her offense would reward her in the bottom of the second when Madison Kay got things started with a single. Shields would replace her on the base paths, and Maria Clark would walk to put runners at first and second with one out. A wild pitch move Shields to third and that was the opening Cardinals needed. Keke Warrix would bring home the game's first run with an RBI single. Aaliyah Walker withdraw a walk to load the bases, and Peyton Massey would bring home another one with a walk that extended Wheeling's lead to 2-0. With the bases still loaded Ava Kresak would come through with a two RBI single that gave Wheeling a 4-0 advantage after two.
Frostburg State get there first run of the day in the top of the third, but Shields held it to just one run, keeping it a 4-1 game after three innings. After getting through the top of the fourth the first rainstorm came through sending the teams to The dugout for the first rain delay. After a 15-minute wait the teams return to the field for the bottom of the fourth and Walker let's start things with a single. She would end up stealing second base before Massey pick up her second RBI of the day with a single. She was thrown out trying to advance to second, but the Cardinals stuck to their 5-1 lead after four. In the top of the fifth, Frostburg State would get that run back with a solo home run but Shields once again shut down the threat keeping it a 5-2 game.
For the first two outs were recorded in the top of the fifth, Wheeling with load the bases on a Warrix walk, a Walker single, and a Massey walk. With the rain starting to come down even harder, the team will leave the field and the game would be called at that point.
