Crestview Hills, KY. – After taking a loss against the defending Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) runners up on Tuesday, the Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team (4-4, 3-2) hit the road Saturday looking to bounce back. They did just that behind the strength of their offense as the Cardinals took down Thomas More 17-8 to move to 3-2 in conference play. The Cardinals are back over .500 in GMAC play and are in the midst of a three-game road trip.
Over the first two and a half minutes of play, both defenses held each other at bay. Each team would get off one shot, with Wheeling's
Austin Hall picking up a save, but it was the second Thomas More shot that found the back of the net. The Cardinals trailed 1-0 before getting the offense going. The Cardinals would rattle off four shots in a row beginning at the 9:19 mark, but couldn't find the back of the net. It was on the fifth shot attempt that
Brenner Chase would score an unassisted goal to get the Cardinals on the board and tie the game at 1-1. With the quarter coming to an end, it was a caused turnover by
Gabriel Hennin that got things going again. The Cardinals would complete the clear and
Jack Rowe made a push. He dished it off to Chase, who picked up his second goal of the day and the Cardinals led 2-1.
The Cardinals would get on the board one more time before the quarter ended as
Dylan Lavern picked up a ground ball and got the offense started. He would take it all the way to the net for the Cardinal's third goal of the day, giving them a 3-1 lead heading into the second. Wheeling would keep that momentum going right into the second quarter, with Chase as the set up man. He would dump the ball to
Dakota Strong, who put it in the net for his first goal, upping the Cardinal lead to 4-1. However, the Saints were not going to back down, scoring four straight goals over the final 10 minutes of the half. It flipped the script and as the teams headed for the locker room, Wheeling found itself trailing 5-4 and looking to get back on top.
Thomas More would continue that momentum coming out of the locker room, scoring their sixth goal of the day and the Cardinals needed a stopper. It was a save by Hall that got them back in the driver's seat, as the Cardinals completed the successful clear. Wheeling would be Man-Down, but wouldntLet that stop them as Chase hooked up with
Ty Taylor to get the Cardinals back on the board, making it a 6-5 game. Minutes later, the Cardinal offense was back at it, and tied the game as
Dakota Strong found Lavern. It was the highest scoring quarter of the day for the Cardinals as they would go on to score four straight goals. Strong would be next on the board to give Wheeling a 7-6 lead with 6:03 to go in the quarter on a pass from
Jack Rowe. Wheeling would win the ensuing face off and took it all the way to the net as
Brenner Chase found
Ty Taylor to push Wheeling's lead to 8-6.
The Cardinals got on the board one more time before quarters end, with
Ryder McCall finding
Owen Doyle. To give Wheeling a 9-7 lead heading into the final quarter. The goals must kept on coming in the fourth quarter as Wheeling put up six more goals in the final 15 minutes.
Ty Taylor would account for two of the six goals in the quarter, one assisted and one unassisted to round out his big offensive day. The other four goals came from four different Cardinals, with
Mitchell Park,
Dylan Lavern,
Jack Rowe, and Trent Rogerson all getting on the scoreboard. The Cardinal defense did their part, holding Thomas More to just three shots in the final 15 minutes, allowing one in the back of the net. The Cardinals would hold on for the 17-8 win that moved them to 3-2 in conference play.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was
Ty Taylor, who finished with five goals and five points on the day. He led the team with 12 shots, putting nine of those on goal to round out the effort. The team leader in points on the day was
Brenner Chase, who finished with two goals and a team-high six assists.
