Philadelphia, PA. – The season-opening road trip continued on Saturday for the Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team (1-1, 0-0) as they traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After trailing 8-6 to Holy Family at halftime, the Cardinals put up eight goals in the final 30 minutes to earn a 14-10 come from behind victory. The Cardinals were led by a pair of three-goal scorers as they put their first win of the 2025 season on the board.
Heading into halftime, the Cardinals were trailing 8-6, but a goal just before the break by
Jack Rowe swung the momentum in their favor. They would take that momentum and run with it, scoring in the opening minute after a face-off win by
Dane Golden.
Mitchell Park would pick up the ground ball and went straight to goal. He fired a shot around the keeper and hit the back of the net for his first goal of the season, making it an 8-7 game. However, in that same minute, Holy Family would have a response of their own before both defenses took over. It would take six more minutes for either team to respond, with
Ty Taylor picking up a ground ball off a blocked shot and feeding it to
Dylan Lavern to make it 9-8. Taylor would tie the game with a goal of his own a minute later and Lavern would give the Cardinals the lead with six minutes left in the third, making it 10-9.
Those would be the final goals of the quarter and the Cardinals entered the final 15 minutes of play with that same 10-9 lead. After Holy Family tied the game at 10-10 with the first goal, the Cardinals would put the game away, scoring four straight goals. The run started with a
Jack Rowe goal, taking advantage of a man-up situation with 9:37 to play. A minute later,
Brenner Chase would make it a two-goal game, taking an assist from Lavern, and
Landon Gallagher would score his first career goal to make it a 13-10 game. The final goal would come with 2:54 to play as Rowe once again brought the ball into the offensive zone. He would connect with
Dakota Strong, who found the back of the net, closing out the scoring.
Austin Hall would make a save on the final Tiger push of the night and the Cardinals completed the comeback with a 14-10 win.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was a pair of three-goal efforts courtesy of
Jack Rowe and
Dylan Lavern. It was a career day for Lavern, who set a new career-high with three goals in the game, and added two assists to lead the team with five points on the night. He would tie for the team lead with eight shots taken, and was the most efficient shooter putting five of those on net. Rowe would also put up a three-goal effort, finishing with three goals and one assist to finish with four points on the day. The effort gives him seven points in two games, with goals leading the way in the first game and assists in the second.
Dakota Strong,
Brenner Chase, and
Ty Taylor would round out the multi-score effort, putting up two goals each.
Austin Hall got the start in net, finishing with 18 saves on 10 shots faced on the night.
Early on, it was the Cardinal offense that set the tone, scoring just 44 seconds into the contest.
Dakota Strong would get the scoring started at the 14:14 mark, and less than a minute later, Rowe would take a pass from Taylor and made it a 2-0 contest. There would be a nearly seven minutes low in the scoring action, with Holy Family getting their first goal of the night at the 6:28 mark. They would tie the game less than 10 seconds later, and the Cardinals were looking for a response. After winning the next face-off, the Cardinals would get that response as
Brenner Chase took the ball after a violation and found the back of the net to make it a 3-2 Cardinal lead. However, back-to-back Holy Family goals would flip the score, and by the end of the first quarter it was a 4-3 game.
The Tigers continued their success into the second quarter, scoring three straight goals and pushing the lead to 6-3. With 10 minutes to go before the half, the Cardinals would look to fight back and after winning a face-off got into the offensive zone. Lavern would shovel the ball to Taylor, who broke the scoring string and made it a 6-4 game. On the ensuing face-off, the Cardinals would get another win and once again moved into the offensive zone. This time, Lavern would take the ball to the net himself and made it a one-goal game at 6-5. Two more Tiger goals would make it a three-goal game once again, but with under a minute to go, the Cardinals had a successful clear attempt and set up their offense.
Trenton Rogerson would be behind the net and found Rowe, who put the ball in the net. That would bring the halftime score to 8-6, setting up the Cardinal comeback.
The Wheeling University Men's Lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, March 1st when they play both their home opener and GMAC opened against Davenport with opening face-off at 1 PM.
