Women’s Swimming Rounds Out Historic 2024-2025 with 13 All-MEC Honors, Two MEC Titles

Wheeling, W. Va. - The 2025 Mountain East Conference (MEC)/Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) Swimming & Diving Championships saw the Wheeling University Women's Swimming team make history. Their fourth place finish overall was the highest finish at the championship even in program history, and they finished as runners-up among MEC Competitors. The history kept on coming as the event concluded, with the Cardinals earning All-MEC honors in 13 different events across the four-day event.

Among those awards were two individual MEC Championships coming from senior Jade Miller and junior Gabby Baiano. The first All-MEC honor would come on day two when Baiano took on the 200-Yard Freestyle. She would qualify for the A Final during the morning swims, and would end up taking 8th overall in the event. It was enough to lead all MEC competitors, swimming a time of 1:56.52 to earn the individual crown. It was her third career MEC Championship as she showed off her versatility in the mid-distance event. The final MEC Championship would come on the final day when Jade Miller took on the 200-Yard Backstroke. The Backstroke has been one of her main events throughout her career and she once again qualified for the A Final. She rounded out her senior year strong, taking fifth overall and first among MEC competitors with a time of 2:08.67 to grab the title.

As a team, the Cardinals would have at least three All-MEC honors on each day of competition. The first day would be their biggest day, with the team bringing home two Relay and two individual All-MEC honors. The Cardinals would get their third and final MEC Championship of the event to round out the first day when Miller, Lydie Sprecher, Grace Moorley, and Sophia Castillo took the pool for the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay. The foursome won the first individual relay championship in program history, swimming a time of 1:39.74. The day would kick off with another All-MEC relay title, with Miller, Sofia Gonzalez Bernal, Sprecher, and Castillo eared Second Team All-MEC honors with a time of 1:51.67. The day would round out with two more individual honors, with Miller earning Honorable Mention All-MEC in the 200 IM (2:14.48) and Baiano taking Honorable Mention All-MEC in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (10:42.17).

After the first individual All-MEC honor kicked off day two in the 200-Yard Freestyle, the honors would continue with Miller back in the pool for the 400 IM. She would qualify for the A final in the morning, and earned Honorable Mention All-MEC with a time of 4:45.56 to earn her second honor of the event. The day would round out with another relay honor as Baiano, Sprecher, Morley, and Langmyer taking Honorable Mention All-MEC honors in the 400-Yard Medley Relay, taking sixth with a time of 4:07.05. Day three kicked off with the 500-Yard Freestyle and another All-MEC honor for Baiano as the junior took 2nd Team All-MEC honors with a time of 5:10.13. Miller was the other individual to win an honor on the day, taking 2nd Team honors in the 100-Yard Backstroke with a time of 59.69 to earn her third All-MEC honor.

It would be the long-distance relay that rounded things out as Baiano, Sprecher, Morley, and Langmyer took on the 800-Yard Freestyle Relay. The team would take 2nd Team All-MEC honors, swimming a time of 7:58.77 to round out the day. The final day of the competition would see three more Cardinals honored, beginning with the 1650 Freestyle. Baiano would earn Honorable Mention All-MEC honors in the event, swimming a time of 18:01.51 to round out her championship run. Miller's individual win would be the second honor of the day, and the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay would round out the event. Baiano, Langmyer, Moorley and Sprecher teamed up for their third relay All-MEC honor, swimming a time of 3:39.39 to finish Second Team All-MEC.

With the 13 All-MEC awards at the Swimming & Diving Championships, the Cardinals have now had 31 student-athletes earn All-MEC honors this season, with eight Wheeling Women's swimmers adding to that number. The Wheeling Wrestling team took home the last All-MEC honor when heavyweight Gavin Harper took home Honorable Mention All-MEC honors for the first time in program history.

The Wheeling University Women's Swimming team now heads to the offseason as they look to continue their growth in the pool.
