Wheeling, W. Va. - While we are still a week away from the Wheeling University Athletic teams returning to the competition field, the Alma Grace McDonough Center will see action this weekend. Wheeling University will serve as the host to 25 local wrestling teams from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio when they welcome in the 2025 Wheeling Park Wrestling Duals. After being hosted at the Highlands Sports Complex over the last several years, the Cardinals are excited to welcome some of the top local wrestlers inside the Alma Grace McDonough Center.
The event has been running for the past 35 years and is one of the premier high school tournament events in the area. The tradition began in 1991, with the first event being held at the host Wheeling Park High School, and having several venue changes over the years. It has been hosted at WesBanco Arena and the Highlands Sports Complex, with the venue being changed to the Alma Grace McDonough Center for the first time in 2025. It serves as a warm-up to the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) Ron Mauck Championships which are held in mid-January. The 36th year of the event will feature the Alma Grace McDonough Center's facilities, used to provide the best experience to the wrestlers.
The event will be held across two days, Saturday, December 27th, and Sunday, December 28th, with the event being separated into five rounds. The wrestlers will compete on 10 mats, placed between the Alma Grace McDonough Center's performance and auxiliary gym. Each day of competition is set to begin at 10 AM, with five rounds being competed on each day. Each round will be an hour and 15 minutes and feature two teams in dual meet action on each mat. Included in this year's field are 25 teams from across three states, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, with the champion being crowned on Sunday.
